In Bonorva, thanks the work of over 300 weaver and several looms, the ancient textile tradition, handed down from fathers to sons, is still alive. Gavina Cossu and the weavers who work in “Su telalzu” (the loom in Sardinia) are the only guardiansof such an art, which risked to be forgotten.
In the laboratories, where the ancient looms dominate, tapestries, curtains, towels, sheets, tableclothes are still designed in several materials, such as: cotton, linen, mixed wool, sardinian wool and silk. It is prefered to use local materials, such as the Sheep’s wool from Bonorva. The wonderful drawings date back to the 19th Century, but new drawings are available on request.
The bonorvese ancient processing called “a s’agu” (by a needle) produces wonderful embroiders, also used as saddle pad and horse necklaces. The fampous carpets, also known as “a pibiones”, derive their name from an ancient needle, which was used to make the refined embroiders of the drawing, called “a beghitta”. This is stiffened by 3 layers of cotton, thereby forming, thanks to the spike processing, “s’intesa”, that is the base of the warp.
A different kind of weaving is called “littos”: a scheme on whereon the drawing will be developed.
